Cold and Flu Season is HERE!!!

We’re in the thick of cold and flu season. And despite the CDC’s mask suggestions, sickness still manages to wiggle its way into our lives—usually when it’s the most inconvenient. While we’re all familiar with what to do in public spaces these days, there are plenty of ways to fight off germs before you leave your house. Good health starts at home. And while it might not be possible to avoid sickness forever, you can certainly cut back on feeling awful by sticking to these simple steps.

1.     Wash your hands. These seems to be a new concept for many, but the benefits of washing your hands for at least two renditions of “Happy Birthday” have been around for a long time. Our hands pick up so may unwanted germs. Staying healthy starts with making sure your mitts stay clean.

2.     Go outside! Even in this frigid weather, our bodies need fresh air and sunlight. Vitamin D is crucial to keeping our immune system active. Be safe this winter but give your system the gift of sun at least once a day.

3.     Get a good night’s sleep. This one isn’t just about getting enough sleep, it’s about avoiding lack of sleep. When we’re tired and run down, our immune system struggles to do its job. Give your body a break and the rest you need by making 7-9 hours of good sleep a regular habit.

4.     Drink all the water. Water helps move toxins and waste through our bodies while transporting needed nutrients to all the right places. Sodas, sports drinks, and other beverages filled with sugar do the opposite by feeding the bad stuff and suppressing your natural immune system.

5.     Go back to the basics—a good diet and workout regimen. The goal is to make your body work for you by treating it well. Exercise promotes the process of pushing toxins out of our body while also aiding white blood cell production. A well-balanced diet, packed with nutrients, vitamins, and healthy proteins, pumps up your immune system and gives your body the tools it needs to fight off infection.
